If I were

If I were Kelvin Maigwa

Malawi Police Service (MPS) deputy national spokesperson, I would appreciate that my statement that police could not arrest businessperson Oswald Lutepo on arrival at Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) in Lilongwe last week because he had indicated that he would hand himself over, was unfortunate and irresponsible.

If I were brother Kelvin, I would have avoided commenting on the matter instead of giving such a flimsy reason for the police’s failure to arrest the suspect.

Yes, while Lutepo remains innocent until proved otherwise by a court of law, I would realise police’s need to arrest him since he was a wanted person in connection to the Capital Hill cash-gate.

How I wish I were bwana Maigwa, because I would realise that my statement would make people wonder why they could not pounce on a suspect allegedly connected to the notorious cash-gate, when they do pounce on suspects of less serious crimes.

Perhaps if I were the MPS deputy national spokesperson, I would be honest enough to admit that the police goofed big time.

That is if only I were the big shot that is Kelvin Maigwa. Unfortunately, I am not him.
